History

When Maurice Bristol Kilmer founded the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home in Argyle in 1927, wakes and funerals were still being held in the home. Since the funeral director's place of business was not a gathering place for families, a store front location, often used to sell furniture and coffins, was also used as a place to prepare the deceased for the home viewing/funeral. In 1930, "Mo's" store front location burned to the ground, rendering the business a total loss. Undaunted, he moved to what is now the present location at 123 Main Street in Argyle. Today the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home is a fourth generation family firm and continues to thrive under "Mo's" son, George Kilmer, his grandson, Todd Kilmer, his great-grandson Kyle Kilmer, as well as their staff. In addition to the Argyle location, the Kilmers also have funeral homes at 82 Broadway in Fort Edward, which was opened in 1970, and the former Clark Funeral Home at 136 Main St. South Glens Falls, which was reopened and expanded as the Kilmer Funeral Home in 1992.

Susan B. Anthony

This lecture is a retrospective on the nineteen years Susan B Anthony’s family lived in the hamlet of Battenville in the Town of Greenwich on the Batten Kill. Many people don’t realize that Susan’s family moved to Battenville in 1826 when Susan was only 6 years old. The area is a virtual history book of the Anthony family but until recently there was not a historic marker anywhere. Many of the events that formed Susan’s thoughts about women’s suffrage were developed in this little settlement during her childhood and young adulthood. Most people drive through this historic community without knowing its amazing history.

Included will be the influence on Susan’s life by her Quaker heritage from the Anthony family. Daniel Anthony and his family were a part of the Quaker friends in the Adams, Massachusetts before their move to Battenville in 1826. Susan’s mother, Lucy Anthony remained a Baptist throughout her life even though she attended the Quaker meetings with her husband and the children.

Photos of the newly restored outside of the Battenville house will be included in the presentation

Debi Craig and Sandy McReynolds will present a Power Point presentation focusing on the numerous sites in Greenwich, Easton, Jackson, and Cambridge, NY that involved the Anthony family.

Debi Craig is past president of the Washington County Historical Society and still serves as chairperson for the Washington County History Fair and the Programming Committee. She is also president of the NorthStar Historical Project which promotes Underground Railroad history in the Easton/Greenwich area. She is Corresponding Secretary of the Hebron Preservation Debi also serves as Hebron historian. She is Chaplain of the Willard’s Mountain Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Sandy McReynolds is historian of the Gill Room in the Greenwich Free Library. She is also historian for the Town of Greenwich. Sandy is a member of the Easton-Greenwich Historical Association. She is the  Past Regent for the Willard’s Mountain Chapter of the DAR. Sandy frequently leads walking tours of the historic district in Greenwich focusing on many different topics of local history.

Visit Grant Cottage State Historic Site, the final home of Ulysses S. Grant, Civil War Commanding General of the U.S. Army, 18th U.S. President, and beloved American public figure.

Impoverished by a Ponzi-style swindle and dying of throat cancer, Ulysses S. Grant moved to the Cottage on June 16, 1885. With the love and support of his family, his publisher Mark Twain and the nation at large, he completed Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant only days before his death on July 23, 1885. The publication of this two-volume work ensured his family’s financial security and gave the world one of the most critically acclaimed memoirs by a U.S. president or historic military figure.oday, the cottage remains essentially the same as during the Grant family's stay.  Visitors tour the downstairs of the cottage, viewing the original furnishings, decorations, and personal items belonging to Grant, including the bed where he died, and floral arrangements that remain from Grant's August 4th funeral. The cottage is now owned by the State of New York and open to the public by the Friends of the Ulysses S. Grant Cottage.
