Old Fort House Museum House, Gardens and Grounds Tour

Our tours at the Old Fort House Museum and grounds are always a popular attraction to visit.

Join The Conkling Center on our next tour with tour Educator, Elizabeth. Fee of $10 is due to The Conkling Center by April 30th. REGISTRATION REQUIREED (by 4/30) by calling 518-793-1494 or emailing tgolden@theconklingcenter.org

Patrick Smyth constructed the house in 1772 with timbers taken from the ruins of Fort Edward, a fortification from the French and Indian War.  During the Revolutionary period the house operated as a tavern, serving future presidents George Washington and James Monroe and playing host to other famous visitors such as Baroness Von Reidesel.

The house served as both a boarding house and a single family home at various times from the 1770s to the 1940s.  In 1953 the Old Fort House Museum opened to the public.

Take a trip back through time as you visit each room in the house.  Visit the tavern of the 1770s,   the living room of the 1830s, the bedroom of the 1850s, and the sitting room of the Victorian Era.  Dine in the 1850s and prepare your food in the 1940s kitchen.

The Old Fort House also hosts the permanent exhibit dedicated to Solomon Northup.  Author of 12 Years a Slave, Northup was married in 1828 and lived here during the first years of his marriage when the Old Fort House was a boarding house.

Dear Friend: Letters From Union Soldier

A native of Cohoes, NY Chris Hogan-Kilburn briefly taught elementary school in Glens Falls before deciding to change careers. From the late 70s on, she worked in the field of Communications, heading the Marketing and Public Relations departments of a broad range of upstate New York businesses and organizations from St. Peter’s Hospital and The College of Saint Rose to SEFCU and The Hyde Collection.

In 2021, she embarked on developing a book containing a collection of Civil War letters donated to the Historical Society by the Smith family of South Glens Falls. The thirty letters were penned by a Wisconsin soldier to his dear friend John A. Bentley, whose family members resided in the Parks-Bentley house from the mid 1800’s through the early 1900’s.

Her presentation is about the book titled, “Dear Friend: Letters from Union SoldierGustavuus Wintermeyer to John A. Bentley”. She will take you through her journey of discovering the letters, the creation of the book, and several of the things she learned about the Civil War from the very personal insights provided by this young infantryman.

The Golden Era of Reading

Little Golden Books were introduced in 1942 when reading materials for children were expanding from the “classics” to shorter vibrant offerings. These high quality children’s books became available at an affordable price and were sold where ordinary people shopped every day. This changed the publishing world and won the hearts of the American children. Reminisce as we look back at the publishers, authors and illustrators who produced the literary phenomenon generations have enjoyed for 80 years.

Program presenters, Dale and Joan Prouty.

Dale and Joan are long time area educators and museum programmers who have enjoyed interacting with youth of all ages. They are charter members of the County School Association of America with both serving on the Board of Directors. They have presented at various local and national conferences.
